Missoula Outdoor Recreation and Education

M.O.R.E.

A high ropes course, transportable teams course and well-trained facilitators provide area citizens a unique opportunity for personal challenge, group development and team building. Groups or individuals may challenge themselves on the ropes course. The Department is a provider of at-risk programming for area youth including team building, community service building as well as a number of other specially designed programs for various youth groups.

Senior Open Space Tours

South Sentinel Hike

We will be exploring the trail that traverses the south side of Mount Sentinel from Crazy Canyon Trailhead to the University Golf Course. Our shuttle vans will drop us off on the east side and pick us up on the west. This beautiful trail combines great scenery with nice wooded sections. Bring plenty of water, good hiking shoes, and dress for the weather. Ages 50+.

Fee: $4

Day/ Date: Tuesday, October 4

Deadline: Friday, September 30

Mt. Jumbo North Loop Van Tour

This is a great motorized tour if you aren’t able to got out and hike or bike the north loop of Mount Jumbo yourself. We will go on the tour in the morning and then lunch will be provided by the Senior Center afterwards. Take advantage of this special outing to learn more about our great open spaces. Ages 50+.

Fee: $7.50

North Hills Van Tour

This motorized tour will take you through the Randolph Homestead and onto the North Hills. These are two beautiful areas that are preserved for us to enjoy. Learn more about why these areas are so special. We will go on the tour in the morning and then lunch will be provided by the Senior Center afterwards. Ages 50+.

Volunteer Stewards of Missoula
Great news! REI has granted us money through Friends of Missoula to build our volunteer program! This money will go towards increasing our tool cache as well as other supplies for future trail projects. Speaking of trail projects, we will be having our next construction project on Saturday, September 17, starting at 8 am. We will meet in McCormick Park and shuttle volunteers out to the Mount Jumbo to create some new switchbacks and reclaim some trails that are in rough shape. Please call Tait at 258-3667 if you are interested in helping out!

 

Wilderness Survival
Become a real “Castaway” and learn some skills that could keep you going in an emergency situation. This course will help you learn to build emergency shelters, find out essentials to bring for your pack trips into the backcountry, and how to handle some emergency situations. This course will be taught entirely in the field so that we can practice the skills discussed, so be prepared to be outside. Ages 16 and up.

Rock Climbing for Beginners
Become a real life “Cliffhanger” with this action/adventure experience. Our knowledgeable instructors will take you step by step from what all the equipment is used to how to move on the rock. This is a great introduction to a fun and exciting activity outside. Why not give it a try? No experience necessary. Bring a lunch and plenty of water for the second day.
Class meets Friday evening, 6-8:30pm and Saturday 8:30am-5:00pm Ages 16 and up.

Open Climbing
Open climbing continues through September. Come down to McCormick Park at the Ropes Course. The 25 foot climbing wall is open to try out climbing or hone your skills. We provide harnesses, helmets, and ropes. No special shoes required. Just wear closed toed shoes and your sense of adventure. Ages 8 and up. No need to pre-register, just show up!

Fee: $3
Day/ Date: Fridays through the end of September
Times: 5:30-7:30pm
Meets at: Ropes Course in McCormick Park

 

M.O.R.E. Opportunities
If you already have a group and are interested in some outdoor adventures, just let us know. We can provide your group with a guided trip to go rock climbing, learn map and compass skills, wilderness survival, rappelling, or a fun hike. Our capable staff is ready and willing to make your adventure dream a reality. Just ask and we’ll take it the rest of the way. What are you waiting for? M.O.R.E. offers rock climbing, whitewater skills and trips, Wilderness First Responder courses, orienteering, cross country skiing and snow shoeing, dog sledding, historical, wildlife and scenery trips and hikes, biking, youth adventure camps, and custom designed trips for your own group. In addition, Parks and Recreation is a recipient of grants through the judicial system and provides prescribed and mandated recreation programs to Youth Drug Court youth. M.O.R.E. also provides court sanctioned community service for youth.
